Consistently, we strive to be a bank that is “beneficial” to people and the planet as opposed to extractive. Our truly unique ownership model helps ensure we act in the best interests of these constituents. All of the economic rights of Beneficial State Bank are owned by our non-profit, Beneficial State Foundation, which is mandated to re-invest all profits, whenever distributed, back into the low-income communities we serve and the environment upon which we all depend. In our theory and experience, this ownership model aligns our incentives with the triple bottom-line and the values of our bank customers. At the same time, it protects the bank from the pressures of private shareholders to insist upon profit maximization that often comes at the expense of our triple bottom-line values. This model ensures more beneficial outcomes for all.

Washington State Correctional Industries produces custom furniture, uniforms and other products for sale to state-funded organizations as a way to provide jobs and skill training for the state’s incarcerated offenders. Job skills improve offenders’ chances for post-sentence employment, which greatly reduces their likelihood of returning to crime. Offenders’ wages reduce prisons’ reliance on tax dollars by paying the costs of incarceration and restitution to victims. In recent years, CI has placed considerable emphasis on environmentally friendly products and sustainable practices, which has opened many new opportunities to provide new products and, subsequently, created additional jobs and training options. Environmentally-focused changes have also reduced landfill-destined waste and saved money for CI and the state prison system.

In the end, companies reduce waste, designers get inspired & you get goods with a unique story.

Carol Bailey conceived of practicing family law in a way we now call Integrative Family Law. During the many years she served as a Guardian ad Litem for children in difficult family law cases she observed how often the legal process itself was the cause of needless destruction of significant relationships important to the well being of both the parents and the children. The primary relationship adversely affected by the legal proceedings was that of the parents of the children, soon to be ex-spouses or ex-partners. Many times, along with the deterioration of trust and ability to work cooperatively over the lives of their children, the parents saw their relationships with their in-laws, friends and larger social circle begin to disintegrate to the detriment of their long term well being and that of their children. This result need not be the case.

Ridolfi’s website reports the company’s sustainability programs and progress: “Ridolfi tracks and reports our carbon footprint for transportation, energy, materials and waste generation. We’ve taken actions to put our principles into practice—from driving a hybrid company car, reducing our office lighting by 25%, purchasing green products and recycling or composting virtually all of our waste stream. We are a carbon-neutral organization, and we offset any greenhouse gas emissions produced with donations to Native Energy. We work to enhance the sustainability of our communities, from volunteering to manage wastes at public events to donating our profits to like-minded causes. We are experts in helping like-minded organizations that want to be cleaner and greener.”

Scope 5’s web-hosted software helps a wide range of private and public-sector organizations extract value from their environmental sustainability and energy data. We are inspired by a vision of transparent, effective sustainability and energy management as a common mode of operation for all organizations.
Scope 5 is the accessible upgrade option from spreadsheets. Organizations typically start their early sustainability reporting efforts using spreadsheet-based tools. Sooner or later these become inadequate. Alternative solutions are too complex and costly for most organizations. Solving this dilemma is our sweet spot.
Scope 5 is developing – and collaborating with – NBIS and a network of sustainability consulting firms that are adding Scope 5 to their solution tool boxes. Prospective partners can contact us directly (firstname.lastname@example.org).
